Review
Fun fact: There is more than one loop that revolves heavily around a Lake. Even more fun fact: both of these loops can be done precisely once to achieve 5 miles.
Both the Top Loop and the Lake Overstreet Loop are genuinely beautiful loops that span through the immaculately maintained Maclay Gardens’ side of the trails. These loops are well-shaded and cared for by the State of Florida. Unfortunately, the sections designated not for hiking or mountain biking only stretch about 5 miles, but that is perfect for this route.
Unfortunately, there is a $4 fee to enter the trails. The fee is paid via an honor system and it is entirely up to your own sense of responsibility and moral code to enter the fee into the collection box. Once you have entered the trails, you will quickly realize why this side of the trails has a fee to enter and why this section of land has been designated as a state park.
Everything about this side of the trail just seems cleaner and overall nicer than the Phipps Park side. The trees are packed more densely, offering a better sense of shade, the air seems cooler, and the environment sort of just seems calmer. I have no clue how much of this sensation is actually there and how much I just made up in my mind. Maybe I have just run so much on the Phipps Park side of the trails that any difference is immediately noticeable, and to less accustomed eyes, both trails will feel equally nice.
Regardless, being able to run a normal 5-mile loop without worrying about the Lake Hill is quite enjoyable. However, there are still some substantive hills on this side of the park. They do not possess the same degree of elevation as the Lake Hill and are for a shorter distance, but you will still have to deal with Florida’s answer to mountains on this side of the trails.
If you want to diversify your method for doing an easy 5 miles, then the Lake Overstreet Loop may be for you. Just remember that you are no longer in Phipps Park but in Maclay Gardens.
